European Film Awards

High honours for Europe's diverse film culture

The European Film Award is regarded as the "European Oscar". It has been awarded to European films since 1988, as well as to people who have rendered outstanding services to European filmmaking. The awards are presented by the 4600-member European Film Academy (EFA) to honour European film culture, to draw the public's attention to European films and to strengthen European cinemas. The European Film Awards are presented every second year in Berlin. In the years in between, a different European city is the host city. In 2024, the award ceremony will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland, for the first time. No award ceremony is planned for 2025: After the 37th edition in December 2024, the 38th award ceremony is to take place in mid-January 2026. The European Film Academy hopes that the postponement will improve visibility in the international awards season.
