In the Swiss Alps, the end of summer is approaching. Ursli helps out his hard-working parents on the mountain pasture. He forms a close friendship with Seraina, who like him spends the summer in the neighboring chalet.
As they bring the summer harvest to the village, part of it is lost, forcing Ursli's family into debt with the wealthy village grocer. Having to give up Zila, his goat, to Roman, the son of the store's rich owner, Ursli sees his little world collapse. But when they want to give him the smallest bell for the Chalandamarz parade, Ursli embarks on a daring adventure to retrieve the big cowbell hanging in her chalet in the middle of winter.
