End of Season

Family/Everyday life, Azerbaijan/Georgia 2019

The film tells the story of a small family in Azerbaijan on a day that will change their lives decisively. 24 hours in the lives of these people, 24 hours in which mutual solidarity and respect for one another are not only called into question, but change dramatically. Samir and Fidan are in their mid-30s and have been married for many years. They belong to the middle class and are stuck with their 18-year-old son Mahmud in a two-room apartment in a large log cabin on the outskirts of Baku. Samir is an unemployed actor who sometimes has to make do with bad roles in obscure commercials. His wife Fidan is a pediatrician in a hospital. Their son is a student who is forced to live with his parents for financial reasons. And yet all three are very different from normal, traditional members of an Azerbaijani family. Their behavior not only has advantages, but in this case also less pleasant consequences: Alienation, misunderstandings and stubbornness. The story takes its course when the family spends a long-planned Sunday at the beach. Conflicts already arise on the way to the beach. The dramatic events on the beach, a place that is supposed to make them happy, reveal all the real problems of the family and of society in general. “With impressive virtuosity, this drama, which can also be interpreted politically, unfolds the stagnation of a family that cannot find a way out of its inner isolation. - Worth seeing!” (Encyclopedia of International Film) “'End of Season' tells of a family's painful circling within itself. Because life stands still and the images can only be taken from the family's inner inertia, everything begins to repeat itself and become more and more similar. This can certainly be read as a great allegory of Azerbaijani society. But even without the political dimensions, 'End of Season' is a profound debut full of poetic radiance and shattering insights.” (Sebastian Seidler, on: filmdienst.de)
